I went through multiple contests looking for one that included writing...and they all (with on exception) are like that....
JUST BECAUSE IT IS NOT VISUAL, DOES NOT MEAN THAT WRITING IS NOT ART.
Someday I'll bring about a deviantart revolution...i just have to you know....get popular enough that people would pay attention...which requires some sort of astounding visual art....CURSES....I've never been good at becoming popular...I like my nerd crowd...

mk...anyway moving on...I've been researching for a story that I am going to write for a veeeeery long time...
For me researching is everything from looking up ideas for "powers" and reading about every mythological creature ever created in the world to reading reviews of books from the same or similar genre. Kind of exhausting....
The progression of character ideas in my head is astounding...there is only one character who has stayed the exact same...

One of the things you say you have issues with is the fact that you need references...well you can always use yourself....thats what I'm doing...my mom took a picture of me for mine...which was sort of embarrassing 'cause I had to make a serious face and look all dark...
